Most first aiders can remember the key skills they learned on their course. But when an emergency happens, confidence is just as important as knowledge.
That's why we've refreshed our First Aid at Work training suite.
The qualifications remain expert-led and HSE-compliant, but our learning experience has been redesigned to better reflect how people build confidence: through practice, realistic workplace scenarios and continuous feedback.
Why we’ve refreshed our training
The workplace continues to evolve, but the need for confident first aiders never changes.
Our refreshed First Aid at Work suite is designed around experiential learning, helping learners develop competence through repeated practice rather than focusing solely on an end assessment.
Great first aid training isn't about remembering information for an exam. It's about having the confidence to respond when someone needs help.
Our training is backed by nearly 150 years of experience, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t always looking for ways to evolve too. We’re ready to power up your learning experience – and here’s how.

Building confidence through real-world learning
As a first aider, you will have learnt step-by-step protocol – and while this is incredibly helpful for remembering the steps for a particular method, DR C ABC, for example, you probably also know that real life and a textbook don’t always match perfectly. For example, you probably also know that real life and a textbook don’t always match perfectly.
A casualty with severe bleeding may also show signs of shock or become unresponsive, requiring you to recognise changes and adapt your response. Real emergencies don’t always fit neatly into a single topic, so why should first aid training be any different?
Rather than teaching each first aid topic in isolation, the refreshed courses build your skills throughout the learning experience. You’ll begin with more straightforward situations before applying what you’ve learnt to increasingly complex scenarios.
By revisiting and building on earlier skills, you can strengthen your knowledge, decision-making and confidence as the course progresses.
Working through a scenario as it develops helps you connect different skills and retain knowledge more strongly as you build on earlier learning, so you feel more confident applying your training.
Training that reflects the workplace you work in
Even when you’ve practised individual techniques, it can sometimes be difficult to envisage how an emergency might unfold in your workplace.
That’s why we’ve improved our bank of first aid scenarios so that they better reflect today’s workplaces. The refreshed courses introduce workplace-based situations tailored to environments such as:
- Offices
- Construction sites
- Educational settings
- Restaurants
- Outdoor activities
The aim is simple: practise situations that feel relevant to the risks you may encounter at work.
Understanding how an event could occur, what risks are present, who you may be able to call upon for assistance, and what part your environment may play can help first aiders develop stronger decision-making skills and confidence to act under pressure.
Knowing how to treat severe bleeding is one thing. Working through a realistic construction site emergency scenario could be the difference between hesitation and confident action.
And if you don’t work on a construction site, our expanded scenario bank covers a range of working environments and risk levels, helping you consider how first aid skills could apply in your workplace.

More hands-on learning. More opportunities to practise.
Hands-on learning has always been central to our courses. When learning CPR, for example, practising on a manikin helps you really understand how hard and how fast to push.
The refreshed courses create more opportunities to apply your skills throughout the course. Repeated practice means there’s less passive listening, more active participation.
To keep learners actively involved and provide different ways to explore and apply the course content, we have:
- Expanded our activity bank
- Created more interactive exercises
- Introduced more in-depth scenario-based learning
- Developed new quizzes and digital tools
With different learning styles, different workplaces and different needs in mind, our course refresh covers both our traditional classroom and blended training options for First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work Requalification and Emergency First Aid at Work.
Across our courses, you’ll have opportunities to practise with the support and guidance of an expert trainer.
Continuous feedback that helps confidence grow
First aid training should be about developing skills you can use, not spending the entire course worrying about a final assessment.
We’ve developed our approach to continuous assessment even further.
That doesn’t mean being scrutinised throughout the course. It means receiving constructive guidance as you practise, so you can develop your skills as you go.
Making mistakes during training is part of learning. The focus is on helping delegates develop skills and confidence, not putting people on the spot when things don't go perfectly the first time.
Ongoing feedback helps you understand your progress throughout the course, rather than receiving all your feedback at the end. Knowledge and key skills will still be assessed, but you’ll have opportunities to learn, practise and improve along the way.

Learning designed around real people
Different learners, workplaces and working patterns call for flexible ways to train, and we’ve taken all that into account.
We understand that there’s no one-size-fits-all way of learning and with this in mind, we’ve applied the same powered-up principles to both our traditional classroom courses and our blended options.
Blended training combines self-directed, interactive modules completed on a digital device prior to classroom-based practice of hands-on first aid skills.
Updated eLearning modules provide an interactive experience that allows you to learn theory at your own pace, while the classroom learning can focus on practical elements including CPR, bandaging and practising using a tourniquet.
Blended learning can be a particularly useful option for people with prior experience who are looking to refresh previously learnt skills.
What’s staying the same?
Core first aid skills remain at the heart of our training. Our courses will continue to be delivered by expert trainers and remain fully HSE-compliant, helping organisations meet their responsibilities while preparing people to respond when help is needed.
The qualification itself hasn’t changed. What has changed is how you’ll learn.
Through realistic workplace scenarios, practical activities, continuous feedback and flexible learning options, the refreshed course experience is designed to help your skills stick and build your confidence to act when it matters most.
By training with St John Ambulance, you’ll also support our charitable mission to put the power of first aid into everybody’s hands.
