At St John Ambulance, saving lives is at the heart of everything we do. But alongside putting the power of first aid into everyone’s hands, we also recognise our responsibility to care for the environment.
Which is why we’re proud to announce that St John Ambulance has achieved ISO 14001 certification, the internationally known standard for Environmental Management System (EMS). This achievement is an important step in St John Ambulance’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and cementing sustainability into the way we operate every day.
But what is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is a globally recognised framework that helps organisations manage and improve their environmental impact. It provides a structured framework that helps organisations achieve key environmental goals, for example: identifying environmental impacts, reducing waste, meeting legal responsibilities, and driving continual improvement.
Receiving a certificate demonstrates that St John Ambulance has put important processes in place in managing its environmental responsibilities effectively – showing the organisation is committed to improving its environmental impact.
Why it matters
As one of the UK’s leading first aid charities, understanding the importance of creating a sustainable future for the communities we serve is imperative. And achieving an ISO 14001 certification reflects St John Ambulance’s commitment to responsible business practices and showcases how we have embedded sustainability into our decision-making, planning and operations.
The ISO 14001 certification also supports St John Ambulance’s wider organisational strategy of delivering high-quality first aid services, while remaining a modern, resilient and sustainable organisation for the future. Giving people more confidence in St John’s work, as well as its environmental impact.
A team effort across St John Ambulance
Achieving the ISO 14001 certificate has been possible through the hard work and collaboration of colleagues across the organisation. Whether that’s from developing new processes, or sustainable practices within teams, and across the organisation – the people of St John Ambulance have made this possible.
Moving beyond
While achieving ISO 14001 certification is a significant milestone, it is not the finish line. As St John Ambulance continues to grow and evolve, sustainability will remain a key consideration in how we deliver our services, support our people, and serve communities across the country.
Our focus now turns to embedding environmental responsibility into everyday decision-making and delivering our ongoing Net Zero and Carbon Reduction Plan. Through reducing emissions, improving resource efficiency, strengthening sustainable procurement, and minimising waste, we will continue to reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the resilience of our operations.
Together, we are building a better, greener and more sustainable St John Ambulance, ensuring that we not only save lives today but also protect the environment for future generations.
