The Basic Sports First Aid is delivered by St John Ambulance’s experienced trainers, combining real-world insight with hands-on learning.

We won't just tell you about first aid. We'll give you the confidence to deliver first aid when and where its needed.

This one-day course provides essential first aid skills to manage injuries and medical emergencies that occur during sporting activities. It is ideal for coaches, referees, players, and anyone involved in sports who wants to respond confidently when accidents happen.

Our Sports First Aid course covers a wide range of scenarios, from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies. Delegates will learn practical techniques including CPR for adults and children, managing bone, muscle and joint injuries, and treating head injuries and severe bleeding.

Upon completion, delegates receive a St John Ambulance certificate valid for three years, along with ‘Good Samaritan’ insurance, giving peace of mind to provide first aid beyond the sports field. This course does not meet HSE requirements for workplace first aid but is tailored specifically for sporting environments.

This course covers how to deal with injuries and medical emergencies that can happen during sporting activities.

The following subjects will be taught on this Basic Sports First Aid Course:

  • Adult resuscitation (CPR)*
  • Bone, muscle and joint injuries
  • Chest pains
  • Child resuscitation (CPR)
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Head injuries
  • Heat and cold extremes
  • Managing a casualty outdoors
  • Minor and severe bleeding
  • Primary survey
  • Role of the sports first aider
  • Shock
  • Unresponsive adult
  • Unresponsive child

This course is for anyone involved in sporting activities - this could be referees, coaches or players.

  • Delegates must be aged 16 or older to attend this course.
  • Delegates need a basic command of English (defined as Level 2).
  • Delegates must complete all modules.
  • Delegates must act in a professional and appropriate manner, in line with our HEART values.
  • You need to be physically fit enough to be able to demonstrate CPR*

CERTIFICATION
Delegates who successfully complete this Basic Sports First Aid Course will receive a St John Ambulance certificate of competence on completion of the course, valid for three years.

This course is for people involved in sporting activities and will not meet Health and Safety Executive requirements to become a qualified workplace first aider.

ASSESSMENT
Delegates will have continuous trainer observation during this course, and must demonstrate their understanding and competence on all course subjects.

Our training includes 'Good Samaritan Insurance', giving delegates the confidence to help whenever and wherever it is needed. It covers them against claims arising from first aid they deliver outside of their workplace, club or association, and not covered by any other insurance.

To qualify, they must hold a current St John Ambulance certificate for this course. It is offered at no extra charge, as we are so confident in the standards of our first aid training delivery.
