The TacMed SOF Tourniquet (Gen 5) is an innovative tool that has been built to stop life-threatening bleeding on the arms and legs. Its proven haemorrhage control has earned its trust by military medics and first responders worldwide. It is also the tourniquet of choice by 7/10 of the USA’s largest police departments.
Designed by special forces medics, the SOF Tourniquet can be operated either with one hand or both. This is achieved through its various mechanisms and begins with its reinforced polyester webbing. As a performance material, it not only maximises compression when being applied, but glides effortlessly through a rugged buckle. This means quick, snag-free operation in emergencies. Stitched into the webbing is a contrasting orange wedge, offering a visual confirmation that all of the excess slack has been pulled from the band. This is a critical step for proper tourniquet application, meaning that fewer windlass rotations are required for reaching occlusion.
The windlass itself has been machined from a single aircraft-grade aluminium bar stock. At 5.5”, it has signature conical ends and grip-friendly texture for consistent torque. In any weather or environment, expect it to be durable, thanks to its anodised finish. Working in tandem, a Tourniquet Retention Assistance Clip (TRAC) system holds the windlass in place, until it can be secured. Additionally, the TRAC provides steady handling during tough applications, and enhances control for one-handed movements.
Other features include a Tri-Ring Lock that is used to complete the tourniquet application, by securing the windlass into it. The lock can easily be manipulated with one hand, preventing the windlass from shifting when the patient is moved. Once the SOF Tourniquet has been applied, the time at which it has been completed can be noted using the handy time tag at the end of the band.
